Hopworks Urban Brewery
urm adaptive reuse/Restaurant/retail/brewery
Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) is Portland’s first Eco-Brewpub offering world-class beer and fresh food in a relaxed and communal atmosphere. HUB incorporates a range of sustainable practices in their operation and makes every effort to protect “our” future with a thoughtful alternative. Hopworks is 100% renewably powered and “cradle to gate” carbon neutral.
“SiteHops” is the long-standing union between two childhood friends who grew up in the same cul-de-sac. Jean Pierre Veillet of Siteworks and Christian Ettinger of Hopworks have worked together for many years, so when Jean Pierre’s Ecoflats was finished and Hopworks wished to debut a smaller concept, it was like chocolate and peanut butter coming together.
For Hopworks Urban Brewery, ecological innovation and bicycle adoration are core to the company’s DNA. Sitework’s energy net-zero, transportation-oriented EcoFlats development on Williams Avenue, Portland’s largest bikeway, spoke to the core values of Hopworks, which were brought to life at EcoFlats in unprecedented ways. From bike frames, to an old beer can collection, to the 99 bottles of beer on the restaurant’s south wall, beer-related objects and bike parts became design elements and fun interactive themes. Above all, “BikeBar” demonstrates energy conservation at a restaurant, a complicated type of business that’s all but left on the sidelines in the energy-conservation race. Appliances run on alternative energy sources and employ state-of-the-art, cost-saving resourcefulness–a rarity in the food industry.
